Time-Honored Principles: Revisiting the Lost Art of Crosscut Saw Use

Friday, Feb. 6, 8 AM - 5 PM
Location: Tradewinds I (Atlantis conference area, second floor)

This one-day workshop includes 4 hours of classroom and 4 hours of field practice. Participants will receive in-depth instruction on all aspects of the crosscut saw and be exposed to many of the “lost” skills of successful sawing. Special emphasis will be given to saw handles, underbucks and long-forgotten wedging techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to practice sawing techniques and use a variety of different tools and saws. Where transportation allows, participants should bring a variety of saws and be dressed for field work. Participants will receive a useful notebook of extensive printed material.

Location
Indoor portion will be at Atlantis Casino Resort, 2nd floor conference area. Outdoor portions will be on the Atlantis grounds using tree trunks imported from the Sierras.

About the Instructor
In 1967 David E. Michael started Logging and working in the woods as a Consulting Forester. For the last 25 years he’s worked in the West from Alaska to Arizona for the U.S. Forest Service in the fields of Engineering, Trails and Wilderness Management.

David is recognized nationally for his technical expertise in trails and traditional tools—especially crosscut saws. He has put on numerous Trails training workshops for public land agencies, user groups and contractors. He is particularly passionate about sharing the “lost art” of crosscut saw use. David is the author of the U.S. Forest Services’ National Crosscut Saw Training Curriculum and also a forthcoming manual on Crosscut Saw Use.

David is presently the Forest Trails Specialist on the Tahoe National Forest and works in Nevada City, California. He is also the Forest Services’ Pacific Southwest Region’s Crosscut Saw Coordinator, responsible for certifying saw instructors.
