Stonework - From Shaping to Installation

Friday and Saturday, March 20-21, 7:45 AM - 5:00 PM
Two-day outdoor workshop
Location: Meet at the Crowne Plaza Conference Center lobby, and

carpool to the outdoor site in the Asheville vicinity.

The Session

Experience the process of finding & shaping stone, transportion of stone via cable rigging, and installation of stone for steps, gargoyles, & cribbing. This 2 day workshop will focus on 3 parts which are all hands on. Up to 30 participants can be accommodated and the participants will be split into 3 groups. Each group will rotate between sites after 4.5 hours of instruction/hands on work.

The workshop will be rain or shine. Lunch will be in the field. Please bring workgloves, safety glasses, work clothing (including boots). Tools and stone will be provided. The maximum participant/instructor ratio will be 5 to 1.

The parts are as follows:

Part 1 - Stone procurementStone rigging through trees
This section will focus on acquiring both native and purchased stone, selecting the right stone for the application, and shaping stone (drilling & splitting using a variety of methods). 2 instructors will be on site.

Part 2 - Stone transport
This session will cover more advanced cable rigging systems for moving stone in the field. Working cable rigging systems will be set up to move stone to the Part 3 worksite. 2 instructors will be on site.

Part 3 - Stone installation
This section will deal with the installation of stone steps, gargoyles used along steps, and various types of stone cribbing. The work will be on an existing trail. 3 instructors will be on site.


                    
The Presenters

The instructors for this unique workshop are partners in Peter S. Jensen and Associates, LLC based out of Great Barrington, Massachusetts.   They specialize in stone construction in difficult to access locations. The partners include Peter Jensen, Erin Amadon, Jed Talbot, Willie Bittner, Sam Roberts, and Ellen Jensen.  In addition, Lester Kenway of Trail Services LLC will be a guest instructor.


When and Where

Friday and Saturday, March 20-21, 2009

Daily meet in the Crowne Plaza Hotel lobby at 7:45 am, with the group leaving by 8 am, and returning at 5 pm.


Fee
The cost will be $350 for early registration (through Feb. 27) and $375 after Feb. 27.   Fee includes lunches on both days.  Registration is on a first-come basis and is limited to30 attendees.
