WTBA Changes Its Name to the Professional Trailbuilders Association

In spring of 2004, association members voted to change the name of the Western Trailbuilders Association (WTBA) to the Professional Trailbuilders Association (PTBA).

Since its founding in 1976 by several private trail contractors who literally invented modern-day trail contracting with the USDA Forest Service, the association's membership has grown tremendously in numbers, location, clients, and scope of work. Current members span the United States and Canada and include specialists in trail planning, design, training, education, and bridges as well as traditional trail builders. In addition, our annual conferences attract attendees from all across North America. The new name was chosen from among many possibilities as the best way to encompass the broad range of activities now undertaken by the association and its members without forming a regional bias.

While some of us miss the romantic feel of the "Western" part of the name, we hope that our new name will broaden PTBA's appeal while encouraging further professionalism in the trail world as a whole.

Look for all of WTBA's activities to continue and strengthen under the new name as we help create the cutting edge of trail research, design, construction, maintenance, training, and education.
