PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Fonta Flora State Trail is a planned trail that will ultimately extend from the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail in Morganton to the Mountains to Sea State Trail in Asheville. The Lake James Section will create a 25-30 mile loop around Lake James traversing public lands, easements across private lands, and the NCDOT right of way. The trail will provide a rural greenway experience for residents and visitors. The Fonta Flora State Trail – Lake James Section Master Plan serves as a road map for establishing the Fonta Flora State Trail around Lake James in Burke County, North Carolina.
The proposed Lake James Section will be an easy to moderate multi-use hiking and mountain biking trail with a natural mineral soil surface. It will be sustainably designed and constructed to minimize erosion and require minimal maintenance. The trail will average a width of five feet and the overall average trail grade or steepness will be 10% or less.
