Trail Design, Planning, Evaluation, and Training Services

Professional History

I started in 1958 as a trail crew member on the Pomeroy District of the Umatilla National Forest. I was promoted (after a two-year stint in the armed forces) to trail crew foreman in 1962. From 1958 to 1964 the Forest Service was doing all the trail maintenance, reconstruction, and construction with their own crews. In 1964 I located, surveyed, designed, and wrote the first trail contract for a trail on the Pomeroy Ranger District. In 1967 I was promoted to District Trail Project Manager.

I transferred to the Tiller District of the Umpqua National Forest in 1973 and to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in 1975.

I was the Forest Recreation Trails Engineer for the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in the Pacific Northwest Region, Region 6, from July 1975 to January 1998. I have 38 years experience in trail planning, location, survey, design, contract preparation, contract administration, construction and maintenance. In the past 23 years I was responsible for the location, survey, design, contract preparation, and contract administration of over 300 miles of trail on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, most of which are in the Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument.

I was a consultant for the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region 6 (Region 6 called us Master Performers) in planning, location, design and construction of hiker, barrier free (accessible), and horse trails. I have assisted several of the Pacific Northwest Region 6 National Forests as well as the Oregon State Parks and the Oregon State Department of Forestry. I have assisted the Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Region 4, the El Yunque Ranger District of the Caribbean National Forest in Region 8, the Petersburg and Thorne Bay Districts of the Tongass National Forest in Region 10, the Mt. Baldy Ranger District of the Angeles National Forest in Region 5, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Washington State Parks, and The National Park Service.
