ACE Wilderness Monitoring Internship, BLM CA
Job Description: ACE Wilderness Monitoring Internship, BLM CA
Six month Position starting immediately and running through August 5.
Summary: The Bureau of Land Management is partnering with American
Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in
Flagstaff, AZ, to recruit and coordinate two Interns to participate in a
variety of monitoring, inventory, and trail maintenance activities in
the Owens Peak Wilderness in Southern California. Recent
national-level BLM policy advances require each wilderness area to be
assessed for current wilderness character so that land managers may
evaluate how conditions are changing over time. ACE s two wilderness
interns will participate in the implementation of this significant
initiative aimed at maintaining wilderness areas in their natural state
by gathering baseline information on the status of wilderness boundaries
and signage, inventorying land use impacts, monitoring trail use, and
by reporting incursions by off highway vehicles. In addition to these
varied monitoring and inventory activities, ACE s two wilderness interns
will help coordina
te and support the activities of volunteer groups assigned to maintain
the 37 mile segment of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which
bisects the Owens Peak Wilderness Area, and will be assigned to perform
basic maintenance tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities: The vast majority of work will take place
in the rugged mountains, deep canyons, and dense riparian areas of the
remote Owens Peak Wilderness, managed by the BLM as an ecologically
sensitive transition zone between the Great Basin, the Mojave Desert,
and the Sierra Nevada ecosystems. ACE s two Wilderness Interns will
spend up to 9 consecutive days, 40 hours per week, hiking and camping in
this remote area, alternating between recording land use patterns and
impacts with GPS/GIS technology and performing physically demanding
trail maintenance activities. The positions are intended to be
multi-faceted, with the expectation that ACE s Wilderness Interns will
gain a greater understanding of multiple land management issues while
learning and applying technical trail maintenance skills and other field
techniques. Up to ź of the work will take place in the BLM s
Bakersfield Field Office, where interns will analyze collected data,
produce maps,
and participate in educational presentations for the general public.
Benefits to ACE s Wilderness Interns:
Opportunity to participate in a national campaign to determine
the current state of the BLM wilderness areas and to gather information
to be used to support conservation efforts.
Opportunity to serve and learn from land management
professionals dedicated to the preservation of the BLM s natural areas
Exposure to a potential career path within the BLM or other land
management agencies, all of which value hands on field experience
$175 per week stipend
$400 per month housing allowance with expectation that the
interns will rent apartments in Bakersfield, CA for the six month
duration (opportunity exists to share housing with the other ACE
Wilderness Intern)
$1,100 per month bonus payable at the completion of the 6 month position.
Qualifications: Since the work will often take place alone or in small
groups and primarily in remote, rugged, wilderness conditions where
summer temperatures could exceed 90 degrees and rattlesnakes are common,
ACE s Wilderness Interns must be fit, mature, safety conscious, and
ready for responsible adventure. Applicants must also have a degree
in Parks and Recreation Managmement, Natural Resource Management,
Environmental Science, Forestry, Agriculture, Botany, or a related
field, although applicants with extensive hands-on field professional
experience but lacking a degree will also be strongly considered. Most
importantly, candidates must have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a
career in the management of America s natural resources. Previous
experience maintaining trails and using GPS/GIS technology is preferred.
Graduates of other conservation corps, AmeriCorps programs, and
similar service organizations are highly encouraged to apply.
Other Requirements:
Available to US Citizens and legal permanent residents only
Must be between the age of 18 and 26
Must have a valid driver s license and a clean driving record
Personal medical insurance is required for the duration of the internship
Ability and willingness to undergo a criminal background check is required of all interns on BLM lands.
Experience driving four wheel drive vehicles over rugged roads
Drug users, including recreational smokers of marijuana, should
not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug
testing.
