The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire Washington DC area high school students (ages 15-19) and young adult members (18+) for the 2018 DC Summer Conservation Crew Program.
Training Dates: June 4 – June 14, 2018 (Leader paid for training, and travel to and from training will be paid by SCA)
Mandatory Site Visit Day: June 18 – June 29, 2018 (exact day dependent upon agency partner availability; leaders will know the exact day and time of their site visits at least 1 month before the visit is scheduled)
Program Dates: July 2 - August 10, 2018 (Work locations will be at National and State Parks in the DC metro area)
Primary Responsibilities:
-Responsible for daily management and supervision of SCA Community Conservation Crew with two to ten members
-Assist co-leader (some crews are solo-led) in managing student and group safety and development, curriculum delivery, outdoor and environmental education, and work project completion
-Lead various conservation service projects designed to build an ethic of community and environmental stewardship. Projects include a range from trail and park maintenance, habitat restoration, to urban agriculture
-Leader is responsible for managing work outcomes and crew dynamics
-Facilitate team operations: food planning, tools & equipment, work schedule, and vehicles
-Manage budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project
-Manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
-Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success/potential
-Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
-Ensure successful completion of work project
-Ensure compliance of SCA Risk Management policies/procedures
-Represent SCA in a positive and professional manner
Qualifications:
-Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must have ability to legally work in the US
-Must be able to attend mandatory Crew Leader training: June 1 – June 14, 2018
-Current First Aid certification & CPR required by the start of training
-Experience working with youth or young adults, teaching in an educational environment a plus
-Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred i.e. invasive species removal, native plantings, stream bank repair, trail maintenance, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
-Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
-Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
-Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
-Must have personal housing arrangements in Washington DC Area
Compensation: $625 per week
