Job Title: SCA WildCorps Project Leader
Job Description: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire four students for the WildCorps Conservation Corps Team.
WildCorps is a unique part of SCA’s Desert Restoration Corps (DRC) which is a partnership between SCA and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This partnership has produced nearly a decade of monitoring, preserving, and repairing fragile habitat in the Mojave and Colorado Deserts of Southern California. WildCorps – comprised of 4 members and 1 leader –is scheduled for a 6 month season.
The crew will spend the 6 months of the program traveling to various worksites throughout the California Desert District to work on projects in partnership with the BLM. Projects may include, though are not limited to: water, wildlife, and resource monitoring; invasive species monitoring and management; trail work and assessment; fence construction/ removal; trail maintenance; public outreach events and Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) restoration. For the remaining for months, the team will be on their Roving Track of projects. The team should be prepared to travel long distances to work on a variety of projects. Previous projects include; trail work in the Bridger-Tetons National Forest, watershed restoration in Yosemite National Park, and native plant restoration in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
During field-based hitches of up to 10 days in length, the crew will live and work out of tent camps in close proximity to worksites. Occasionally, projects may require the crew to backpack into Wilderness Areas. Field-life is rugged, and while on hitch, members should expect to live without electricity, running water, and cell phone reception; additionally, while on hitch, this program is alcohol and tobacco free. Members will typically have 3-5 days off between hitches. For the duration of the Desert Track, the crew will be provided housing in Palm Springs, CA area, where they can stay during off days. The crew’s housing will vary depending on the options available at their project sites. Members should be prepared to camp for much of the Roving Track of the program.

Leader Program Dates: September 10, 2017 – August 24, 2018
Position Summary:
Responsible for daily management and supervision of a Conservation Corps program either in a backcountry or frontcountry site with members 18 & older. Manage member and group safety and development while working on conservation projects. Represent SCA on-site and coordinate with Agency partner on designated project(s).
Primary Responsibilities:
Crew Manager Functions
-Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
-Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, tools & equipment, vehicles
-Assist and train corps members in the conservation skills necessary for the project
Technical Advisor Functions
-Supervise and assist the work skills training of corps members
-Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
-Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential
Partnership Representative Functions
-Manage relationship with agency partner
-Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
-Ensure successful and timely completion of work projects
Program Administrator Functions
-Assist SCA Program Manager to complete required program reporting and documentation
-Assist SCA Program Manager in budget management and reconciliation
-Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
-Represent SCA in a positive manner
Qualifications:
-Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must have ability to work in the US
-Must be able to attend mandatory Crew Leader training: September 10, 2017 – September 15, 2017
-Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification
-Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18), teaching in an educational environment a plus
-Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred (i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening)
-Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
-Excellent communication and leadership skills, strong work ethic are required
-Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
-Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
Compensation: $545 per week
