Job Title: Trail Crew Leader

Job Description: Volunteer trail crew leaders are paid seasonal employees of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK), the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s principal partner in the maintenance and reconstruction of backcountry facilities on Forest Preserve lands. The committed individuals who volunteer with ADK are a huge asset to both our organization and the preserve as a whole. Volunteer trail crew leaders educate, supervise and motivate these individuals and groups. The leader’s first priority is to ensure a safe, positive, and educational experience while accomplishing the highest quality work possible.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Participate in all staff training programs to learn critical trails skills and to develop an understanding of the ADK Trails Program philosophy on appropriate maintenance of backcountry resources. 
• Guide and provide support to volunteers from when they arrive through the end of their stay. • Pass along to volunteers an appreciation of the Adirondacks and an understanding of the purpose of the Adirondack Mountain Club, and the philosophy of the trails program.
• Encourage an open, welcoming and appreciative atmosphere for all volunteers, both in and out of the woods. Always present a professional image.
• Encourage volunteers to maintain a constant awareness of safety. Avoid accidents and injury
through prevention. Always work and travel with a first aid kit.
• Complete all work so that it meets or exceeds ADK & DEC standards.
• Develop weekly menus and complete necessary food ordering forms for volunteer crews.
• Complete weekly work counts.
• Complete weekly evaluations of projects.
• Assist the Trails Coordinator with the maintenance of a complete file of waivers, workers compensation forms and evaluations.
• Maintain and repair the volunteer tool and equipment inventory as necessary.
• Assist the Director of Field Programs with an end of the year program evaluation.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:
• Experience leading groups in a wilderness setting
• Sensitive to group dynamics and needs
• Knowledge of what trail maintenance and reconstruction is
• Effective communicator and teacher
• Ability to supervise a group to accomplish the task at hand
• Ability to carry tools and supplies long distances as well as complete long hours of hard labor
• Knowledge of low-impact camping techniques
• Desire to work in the out-of-doors in extreme conditions
• Certified in basic first-aid procedures
• Positive attitude in a full spectrum of situations

• Full-time, 44 hours per week, Seasonal
• Schedule varies throughout the summer depending on the project Salary: 
• $484.00 per week. Based on a 44 hour work week.
