Job Title: Manager, Trails Stewardship Program
Job Description: Position Overview:
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy’s Trails Stewardship Program engages and sustains a vibrant community of stewards in the maintenance and construction of trails within the Golden Gate National Parks and Mount Tamalpais Watershed. With over 300 miles of trails spread throughout thousands of acres, trails play a vital role in connecting people to their open space lands. The Trails Program supports the Trails Forever and One Tam Initiatives by transcending boundaries to maintain a world-class trail system.
The Manager of the Trails Stewardship Program works to engage communities and partners in the care of park trails and public lands, supports priority park projects on trails, designs meaningful volunteer opportunities, and maintains close working relationships with an array of partners.
A successful candidate for this position will be knowledgeable of and experienced with the core functions of a trail crew. They will be enthusiastic about finding opportunities for collaboration with key internal and external partners and maintaining good communications and positive working relations with those around them. They will also demonstrate leadership and supervisory experience.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Project and Program Administration
• Sets strategic direction, plans, implements and evaluates the Trails Stewardship Program in coordination with the Director of Community Stewardship and Trails Forever Leadership Team.
• Manages budgets and fundraising strategies for the Trails Program in coordination with the Director of Community Stewardship and Trails Forever Leadership Team.
• Works with partner agencies (National Park Service, Presidio Trust, California State Parks, Marin County Parks, and Marin Municipal Water District) and their Trails Crews to understand goals and priorities. Ultimately determines where volunteers, and specific community groups can provide support.
• Conducts research and improves data collection to facilitate Trails Program evaluation and growth, writes quarterly and annual reports.
• Hires, supervises, and evaluates Staff and Interns.
• Understands complexities related to managing volunteers and interns. Problem solves issues with recruitment, workers compensation, documentation, transportation, housing, and payment.
• Ensures safe and responsible use of hand and power tools by staff, volunteers, interns, and contractors. Maintains standard operating procedures and job hazard analyses for all trail building and maintenance activities.
• Facilitates working groups and committees including; One Tam Trails Working Group, Trails Forever Leadership Team. Forms and manages interdisciplinary teams to guide programs.
• Designs and organizes a trail maintenance training series for Staff, Interns, and Volunteers.
• Participates in field work days with staff members, interns, and volunteers and performs manual labor, including brushing, digging, using power tools, and some carpentry.
Collaboration and Outreach
• Works with agency partners and community groups to plan, design and implement Trails Program.
• Coordinates and/or attends public events to build awareness and support for park projects and programs.
• Provides media (photo or video) to communications team, as needed.
• Attends and presents at the annual California State Parks Trails and Greenways Conference, the Bay Area Trails Collaborative meetings, and other trails-related networking events.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Technical: knowledge of principles and practice trail construction and maintenance. At least three years of experience in trail maintenance and construction, planning and program management, and/or resource management.
• Problem solving: identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; works with others to solve complex issues involving multiple disciplines; flexible and open minded with good interpersonal skills.
• Strategic thinking: develops strategies to achieve programmatic goals; understands programs strengths & weaknesses; identifies external issues and opportunities; adapts strategy to changing conditions.
• Leadership: exhibits confidence in self and others; inspires and motivates others to perform well; effectively influences actions and opinions of others. Experienced team leader passionate about the outdoors and trails who has a strong record of partnering with colleagues and others, particularly volunteers, to complete assignments.
• Interpersonal skills: considers and responds appropriately to the needs and capabilities of different people in different situations; is tactful and treats others with respect; relates effectively to others when encountering difficult situations.
• Communication: speaks clearly and effectively, is thoughtful, persuasive; writes clearly and informatively; varies writing style to meet needs.
• Teamwork: pitches in and contributes to achieving group goals; supports everyone's efforts to succeed; balances team and individual responsibilities.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and the internet.
Physical Requirements and Work Environments:
• Work is performed in an office and outdoor setting
• Work is performed standing, walking, squatting, and/or kneeling
• Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6 to 8 hours per day
• Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 50 pounds
• Desired start date: December 9th, 2019
• Schedule: Full-time – Monday – Friday, occasionally works on Saturdays and overnight events
• Position is based out of San Francisco, CA
• Compensation will be commensurate with work experience, skills, and educational background. This is a benefited position.
