Job Title: SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps Team Project Leader

Job Description: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks an experienced, quality oriented outdoor leader to supervise 26 corps members responsible for completing trails projects, habitat and restoration with the SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps program.

Working in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Corporation for National and Community Service (AmeriCorps) SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps Program teams will use traditional trail skills, restoration techniques, carpentry skills, and manual labor to complete an array of projects. Typical past projects have included new trail construction, timber bridge construction, building with stone, removal of invasive vegetation, dimensional lumber construction, and trail maintenance.

Program Dates: February 20, 2017 – August 23, 2017

Primary Responsibilities:

Crew Support-
-Facilitate work outcomes and crew dynamics
-Advise and support members with tools & equipment and food planning
-Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment

Technical Advisor-
-Supervise and assist the work skills training of corps members
-Manage the quality & technique of the work performed
-Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
-Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential

Partnership Representative-
-Manage relationship with agency partner
-Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
-Ensure successful and timely completion of work project

Program Administrator -
-Assist SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps Conservation Coordinator to complete required program reporting and documentation
-Assist SCA Massachusetts AmeriCorps Conservation Coordinator in budget management and reconciliation
-Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
-Represent SCA in a positive and professional manner

Qualifications:
-Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must have ability to legally work in the US
-Previous trail construction experience and knowledge and ability to perform trail construction and maintenance work in both wilderness and non-wilderness settings
-Prior experience in supervising young adults in an outdoor setting, backcountry setting
-Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification
-Excellent communication and leadership skills, strong work ethic are required
-Self-starter ability to work independently, and as part of a team
-Able to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and be able to work in outdoor environment exposed to the elements including camping and hiking for extended periods of time. Up to 5-10 days per hitch
-Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
-Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
-Must have personal vehicle, mileage will be reimbursed at $0.50/mile
-Have working knowledge of safely operating power and hand-tools
-Chainsaw experience and certification preferred
-Rigging/Grip hoist experience preferred
-Carpentry experience preferred
-Completion of an SCA Work Skills Session preferred

Additional Information: Compensation: Salary $545 per week, paid biweekly. Meals and housing provided. Tents and group gear provided for backcountry work projects.
