Job Title: Trail Crew Member

Job Description: Position Summary:
Trail Crew Members functions on a six-member trail crew that operates in the nine Allegheny County Parks and works under the Park Ranger division. These individuals will report directly to the Trail Crew Leader. Trail Crew Members will be able to navigate demanding physical work in often adverse conditions with a positive attitude. This position requires a combination of trail maintenance experience as well as the ability to work with volunteers and organizational partners. This position will be expected to navigate an often-changing schedule and dynamic work environment, and to use a variety hand tools to build and maintain trails.

The incumbent will be expected to work alongside staff and volunteers on various projects. The position requires a team-first attitude, a willingness to learn, flexibility with various work projects, locations and conditions, and an interest and willingness to further the educational and outreach goals of the Allegheny County Parks. Seasonal employment for this position runs from 5/15/2023 to 8/29/2023. Position may be terminated at any time due to weather conditions or project availability.



Duties:
Learns and implements sustainable trail construction, design, and general trail maintenance.
Learns appropriate tool use and care.
Learns and implements volunteer management skills.
Assists with habitat restoration projects.
Performs other related duties as required or requested.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of:
Proper and safe use of hand tools involved in trail work
Outdoor leadership skills
Sustainable multiuse trail system management
Native/Invasive plant species
Allegheny County Parks Trail System

Ability to:
Work effectively as a member of a team.
Act as a park ambassador and provide accurate and responsive information to park visitors.
Establish effective working relationships with managers, co-workers, and public safety personnel in order to ensure that hazards and safety concerns are addressed and resolved so that visitors have a safe and enjoyable experiences within the parks.
Stand and walk long distances for prolonged periods of time daily, often on uneven and difficult terrain, climb and descend steep inclines, engage in frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
Regularly lift, push, and pull objects over 50 lbs.
Work outside in all types of weather, resulting in exposure to extreme cold, heat and humidity, rain, wind, direct sunlight, etc.
Maintain flexible work schedules and report to different park locations.
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Skills:
Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
Veterans' Preference: Will be awarded to eligible candidates.
