Job Title: Backcountry Campsite North Country Coordinator

Job Description: The North Country Coordinator (NCC) is a multi-faceted position in the AMC Campsite Program. The position requires flexibility and the ability to manage ones times very well.

This is a 6 month, senior seasonal position in the AMC’s Trails Department. The North Country Coordinator is a valued member of the programs Leadership team. Your work ethic, attitude and leadership stand as a role model to other caretakers in the program. The North Country Coordinator has primary responsibility to the four unstaffed AMC shelters and tent sites in the Southern Mahoosuc Range; Trident Col Tent site, Gentian Pond Campsite, Carlo Col Campsite, and Full Goose Campsite. As well as the 4 unstaffed tent sites on the Grafton Loop Trail. Being in a senior position in the AMC Shelter Program the NCC is also expected to participate in all aspects of the programs operations as needed. NCC largely design their own schedule based on the needs in the Mahoosucs and throughout the program.

The fundamental responsibility is to provide maximum benefit to the public who use the shelters and tent sites and to protect the surrounding natural resources. The North Country Coordinator is also often tapped to fill in on an emergency basis at the other staffed sites.



What you’ll be doing: 

Composting and site maintenance at the four overnight sites
Act as AMC’s representative in the Southern Mahoosucs
Provide information and education to trail users
Supervising and leading volunteers as needed
Assist with airlift preparation and logistics
Fill in as caretaker as needed
Oversee day to day operations of Shelter Program when Shelter Supervisor or Field Coordinator are unavailable
Assist with opening and closing of shelter sites
Assist with training and orienting of new and returning caretakers
Assist in large projects from shelter rebuilds to platform construction
Assist with AT corridor boundary project
Support Caretakers and do site visits with them
Provide year-end report to Shelter Supervisor
What we are looking for:

Ability to work alone with minimal supervision
Excellent communication and education skills
Knowledge of the AMC Shelter system
Familiarity with campsite rehabilitation, resource protection, and trail work techniques
Ability to carry heavy loads for long distances
Commitment to resource protection and public service
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Leave-no-trace trainer (minimum) (we can arrange to certify if not)
Wilderness first aid (minimum) (we can arrange to certify if not)
Adaptable to last-minute schedule changes/program needs
Flexible work schedule
Attention to detail
Willingness to travel
Strong interest in backcountry education and management
Experience living and working in the backcountry
Working knowledge of AMC Backcountry Campsite Program
The ethos of conserving the White Mountains for future generations
Compensation and benefits:

Salary Range: $16.00-$17.00/ hour
Onsite housing + meals are provided
Free use of AMC Destinations: 4 nights per year
Free annual AMC membership

Matching 403(b): 4% with vesting schedule
Paid Sick Time: eligible to accrue up to 10 days
