Job Title: Backcountry Campsite Caretaker

Job Description: The AMC maintains a series of 14 remote campsites and shelters along the Appalachian Trail in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire and Mahoosuc Mountains of Maine. Nine of these sites are staffed from late May through September and October with caretakers who work and live on site. A caretaker’s responsibilities lie equally in public service and resource protection, which is accomplished through outreach and education. Caretakers are also responsible for campsite management and rehabilitation, trail maintenance, and human waste management.

Caretakers stay on site for 10 or 11 days at a time followed by 3 or 4 nights off. Home is a 10 x 12 canvas wall tent with all food, tools, supplies, and equipment provided. Rotator positions are also available who cover three sites when the regular caretakers are on days off. Those who can work through September are encouraged to apply. Caretakers undergo an intensive 10 day training covering all aspects of the job before the start of their season. Do not hesitate to apply if you do not have any trail work experience, I am primarily looking for passionate people who want to leave the woods a little better than they found it. If you are passionate about this position, please do apply even if you do not feel qualified. The right person, with the right attitude can be taught many of the hard skills needed for this position.
