Job Title: Trail Crew Leader

Job Description: Position Summary:
The Trail Crew Leader functions as the leader for a six-member trail crew that operates in the nine Allegheny County Parks and works under the Park Ranger division. The Trail Crew Leader will report directly to the Lead Supervisory Park Ranger and will be overseen in the field by the Lead and Senior Park Rangers. The Trail Crew Leader will be able to navigate demanding physical work in often adverse conditions with a positive attitude. This position requires a combination of outdoor leadership and trail maintenance experience as well as a proven ability to work with volunteers and organizational partners. The incumbent will be expected to navigate an often-changing schedule and dynamic work environment and work with and lead volunteers on various projects. This position requires a team-first attitude, a willingness to learn and lead, flexibility with various work projects, locations and conditions. Seasonal employment for this position runs from 5/15/2023 to 8/29/2023. Position may be terminated at any time due to weather conditions or project availability.



Duties:
Teaches sustainable trail construction, design, and general trail maintenance to Trail Crew Members and volunteers.
Teaches appropriate tool use and care to Trail Crew Members and volunteers.
Manages regional tool caches.
Manages projects directed by the Lead Supervisory Park Ranger.
Reports staffing issues to Lead Supervisory Park Ranger.
Manages volunteers assisting on projects when necessary.
Assist with habitat restoration projects.
Performs other related duties as required or requested.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of:
Trail crew management.
Proper and safe use of hand tools involved in trail work.
Conflict resolution, teambuilding, and leadership skills.
Sustainable multiuse trail system management.
Native/Invasive plant species.
Volunteer management.
Allegheny County Parks Trail System. 

Ability to:
Act as a park ambassador and provide accurate and responsive information to park visitors.
Establish effective working relationships with managers, co-workers, and public safety personnel to ensure that hazards and safety concerns are addressed and resolved so that visitors have a safe and enjoyable experiences within the parks.
Stand and walk long distances for prolonged periods of time daily often on uneven, difficult terrain, climb and descend steep inclines, and engage in frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
Regularly lifting, pushing, and pulling objects over 50 lbs.
Work outside in all types of weather, resulting in exposure to extreme cold, heat, humidity, rain, wind, direct sunlight, etc.
Maintain flexible work schedules and report to different park locations.
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Skills:
Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
Veterans' Preference: Will be awarded to eligible candidates.
