Job Title: GIS Mapping Team Project Leader - Army Corps of Engineers

Job Description: The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire three students for the Army Corps of Engineers GIS Mapping Team.

Leader Program Dates: July 5, 2016 – December 2, 2016

Member Program Dates: August 15, 2016 – November 27, 2016

Primary Responsibilities:

The Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) is in need of a GIS team to inventory and map trail and road systems throughout California. This project will involve developing and implementing new strategies for collecting data on several ACE sites that have not been inventoried. A team of three Corps Members and one Project Leader will travel to several sites in California over the course of a 15 week project, collect data, map roads and trails, and generate maps for use of Army Corps of Engineers staff. 

-Lead a team of three members to complete a mapping project for the ACE.
-Develop protocols for the team to collect data that meet ACE’s standards and needs. 
-Work with ACE staff to identify project sites and align project goals with ACE priorities. 
-Manage the project resources (tech equipment, vehicle, field gear, and field budget, ect).

Essential Functions:

Crew Manager

-Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
-Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, vehicles, housing arrangements
-Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
-Assist and train corps members in the conservation skills necessary for the project

Technical Advisor

-Supervise and assist the work skills training of corps members
-Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
-Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential

Partnership Representative

-Manage relationship with agency partner
-Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
-Ensure successful and timely completion of work project

Program Administrator

-Assist SCA Program Manager to complete required program reporting and documentation
-Assist SCA Program Manager in budget management and reconciliation
-Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures

Performance Measures/Accountabilities

-Effectively communicate with SCA staff, agency partners, & members.
-Complete all assigned online trainings and hiring paperwork prior to Project Leader Orientation.
-Complete all necessary paperwork prior to members arriving on site.
-Participate fully in Project Leader Orientation and any program-specific trainings.
-Maintain positive relationship with agency partners.
-Provide emotionally and physically safe environment for members.
-Complete all necessary paperwork & reporting, including a post-program phone evaluation with Program Manager.
-Follow all SCA policies and procedures as listed in the Field Operations Standards
-Understand and abide by the guidelines and policies outlined in SCA’s Staff Handbook
-Understand and model SCA’s Operating Values and Leadership Behaviors

Qualifications:

-Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must have ability to legally work in the US
-Must be able to attend mandatory Project Leader training: starting early July
-Current First Aid certification & CPR required by the start of the training
-Experience working with youth (ages 14-18), or young adults (age 18 and older) teaching in an educational environment a plus
-Experience with GPS and GIS mapping. (1-2 seasons of field work or corresponding educational experience) 
-Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
-Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
-Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards

Compensation: (Starting salary $600 a week) total salary depending on experience & program length.
