The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire a team Alaskan youth in the summer of 2018.
Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Leaders lead and manage a group of locally recruited youth to complete conservation projects and biological monitoring in the Tongass National Forest. Leader and crew will work together 5 days on and 2 days off or 10 days on and 4 days off with the youth returning home in the evenings or on the weekends, depending on project location. Leaders are provided housing by USFS in the program communities. Multiple positions are available across the Forest and may involve kayaking, boat and small plane travel, and working with vulnerable populations.
YCC crews may participate in the following:
•Construct and maintain trail
•Soil and water restoration work
•Wildlife management activities
•Recreation site maintenance work
•Painting and facility improvement projects
•Invasive species control
Training Dates: May 21st – June 1st, 2018
Program Dates: June – September, 2018 (end dates vary by position)
Primary Responsibilities:
Crew Manager Functions-
•Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
•Facilitate field team operations: food planning, tools & equipment, and vehicles
•Actively handle any behavioral and crew dynamics issues as they arise, in coordination with Program Staff
•Manage all medical and first aid aspects
•Supervise a crew 24/hr/day, 7 days/week for the duration of the program or according to the YCC leader schedule
•Organize and lead recreational and educational outings for the crew
Technical Advisor Functions-
•Manage the quality & technique of the work performed
•Manage tools and equipment assigned to the team, including maintenance throughout the season
•Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential
Partnership Representative Functions-
•Manage relationship with agency partner
•Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
•Ensure successful and timely completion of work project
Program Administrator Functions-
•Complete required program reporting and documentation
•Assist Program Staff in budget management and reconciliation
•Assist Program Staff in Corps Member Training held in May
•Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
•Represent SCA in a positive and professional manner
Qualifications:
•Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
•Must have ability to legally work in the US
•Must be able to attend mandatory Crew Leader training in May
•Current Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification & CPR required by the start of training
•Documented experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18), and experience as a teacher or leader in an informal or formal educational environment
•Experience with outdoor living skills. Can include: camping (two weeks or more), hiking, safety awareness, leave no trace ethics, kayaking, or basic map/compass skills
•Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred i.e. invasive species removal, native plantings, stream bank repair, trail maintenance, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
•Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
•Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
•Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
•Experience in Alaskan environment preferred
•Experience working with Alaska Native youth preferred
Compensation: $600 per week (including training weeks), paid travel to/from training and site, food provided during programs, and access to group gear.
