Job Title: Trails Steward

Job Description: GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Trails Steward works outdoors building and maintaining trails on Alderbrook Resort & Spa land. The position’s primary responsibility is to maintain the system of nature trails year-round, and provide support to the Trails Designer during expansion/building of new trails. The Trails Steward will also provide support to the landscape team as needed; to include tasks such as mowing, weed pulling, etc. The position will also assist in providing education to Alderbrook Resort & Spa guests and staff; and should have an enthusiasm for the outdoors, and be comfortable assisting/directing guests and sharing knowledge of local flora/fauna.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Maintain existing trail system following the trail maintenance plan (see attached Trail Maintenance Plan)
• Independently identify and repair trail tread issues
• Remove fallen trees with handsaw or chainsaw
• Rake leaves and loose rocks from trail head
• Clean signs and keep visibility clear
• Trim foliage as needed while keeping an aesthetic trail experience
• Remove invasive species
• Check trail structures for safety
• Clean and scrub boardwalks to prevent slippery surfaces
• Remove buildup of debris on structures
• Maintain and care for tools including sharpening and lubrication
• Note standing hazard trees and report
• Keep a trail log book
• Regularly communicate with Trail Designer and Chief Engineer
• Support Trails Designer during new trail construction and lead crew in his/her absence
• Work with landscape/grounds crew on general landscaping tasks when trails do not need attention
• Other duties as assigned

• Work habits: Ability to work independently, autonomously and without supervision, while also able to follow written and verbal instructions when necessary. Able to work long hours and overtime if necessary. Team-oriented.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Ideal candidate will possess experience working in the field of trail building/maintenance. Experience in the safe operation of a chain saw, basic carpentry skills and FS certification a plus. Ability to identify native and invasive foliage by common name.

Position reports to: Chief Engineer, dotted line to Trails Designer
Position supervises: Trail Crew
Position regularly interfaces with: Engineering and Landscape Team

The employee is regularly required to stand for extended periods; walk; sit; climb stairs and trails; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, bend and twist, push and pull, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. May require sustained visual and mental concentration. Employee must be able to lift logs and rocks, as well as push a loaded wheel barrow uphill.
