Job Title: Trail Specialist

Job Description: SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing technical trailbuilding and maintenance assistance to staff and lead trail workdays within assigned areas; in addition to providing training for staff and volunteers on trail maintenance and construction best practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides training and technical assistance to staff and volunteer crews engaged in trail maintenance, park maintenance, and conservation activities in FRMP facilities, including regularly scheduled inspection and maintenance of assigned hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails, including: trail tread and moisture content; de-berming; armoring and bridge conditions; signage; clearing downed trees; mowing; litter pickup; line trimming; drainage features; impacts to natural resources; and maintaining trail corridor to operational standards.

Responsible for volunteer engagement related to trail maintenance and upkeep.

Plans projects, prioritizes jobs, coordinates with supervisors to secure adequate equipment, tools, and staffing to ensure projects can be satisfactorily completed.

Working with Park Managers and the Conservation Supervisor in assigned area, delivers plans for trail projects to the Trail Committee for review and approval. Serves as a member of the Trail Committee and provides technical information and support to aid in the prioritization of projects.

Monitors trails within assigned areas for proper and/or unauthorized use; completes regular trail assessments and inspections; determines trail conditions; and communicates to his/her supervisor or the Marketing and Pubic Engagement Department regarding public notification of trail use status.

Clears and constructs new trail and reroutes existing trails and assists in the layout and design of such trails, as directed by the Trail Committee.

Leads the construction of trail structures including bridges, staircases, fences, retaining walls and boardwalks, on approved trail projects.

Maintains knowledge of industry best practices for sustainable trail building and maintenance.

Operates and trains others in the operation of the trail building equipment.

Ensures all back-country camp-sites connected to trails are maintained and secure, as necessary.

Performs landscape and other maintenance duties including: mowing, trimming, weeding, watering, planting, pruning, weed control, snow removal, cleaning restroom facilities, as needed. Applies chemical herbicides as required.

Enforces safety regulations.

Works with contractors, staff and volunteers, to accomplish the goals of FRMP.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in creating and maintaining a quality experience for all park visitors.

Assists with budgets, maintains records, and prepares reports.

Orders, purchases and acquires materials and supplies, as needed.

Ability to plan, organize and work effectively with diverse groups, including committees, volunteers and staff.

Interacts with the public to provide information, assistance and interpretation of trail building techniques, trail use, and amenities along trail corridors.

Performs other duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED

Computer; printer; calculator; copier; fax machine; telephone; postage machine and other standard office equipment. Clinometer, mobile mapping equipment, tractor, riding and push mowers, backhoe, trimmer, chipper, chain saw, loader, skid steer, excavator, utility vehicles, welding equipment, air compressors, hand tools and other grounds and building maintenance tools and equipment, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A combination of appropriate education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is:

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) with post-secondary coursework in Natural Resources Management or a related field and at least two-years of experience with sustainable trail building and design. Experience with hiking, cycling, mountain biking, and horseback riding, preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Ohio Driver’s License which meets Five Rivers MetroParks’ insurance carrier guidelines.

Valid Class A Commercial Driver License with air brake endorsement or willingness and ability to obtain within two year of employment

Valid Ohio Pesticide applicator license or willingness and ability to obtain within two year of employment.

First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required and Wilderness First Aid within two years of employment.

Computer skills: All components of and intermediate level of competency of Microsoft Office and other job-related software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme cold and seasonal high temperatures for prolonged periods. The employee is frequently exposed to

moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places. The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is often loud.
