Job Title: Trails Coordinator
Job Description: The Trails Coordinator is a temporary, one year position that assists with planning and fieldwork duties for trail development and restoration projects.
•Effectively supervises assigned seasonal employees, including the following:
◦Interviews, selects and trains employees;
◦Coaches employees in proper job performance techniques and procedures;
◦Directs work of employees and sets/adjusts hours of work;
◦Maintains records on employee productivity and appraises employees' productivity and efficiency to recommend promotions or other changes in status;
◦ Handles employee complaints and disciplines employees when necessary;
◦Apportions work among different employees;
◦Monitors or implements legal compliance measures;
◦Determines the type of materials, supplies, or tools to be used by employees and controls the flow and distribution of materials and supplies; and
◦Provides for the safety of employees and the property of Cleveland Metroparks
•Manages all aspects of trail development for selected projects; Researches, plans, develops, coordinates and manages trail construction and rehabilitation projects as assigned: evaluates trail sustainability with additional consideration for the surrounding landscape, features and facilities.
•Oversees and administers work to seasonal employees and volunteer groups to build and maintain trails: Trains staff and volunteers in best work skills practices for trail building; develops and implements strategies as project manager for construction projects; trains staff on various work skills and leads team; monitors and guides team through standards of environmentally sensible practices; acquires appropriate materials as necessary for projects; assures crew safety and overall wellness (including year round outdoor working conditions,) maintains budget and ensures that spending is tracked and filed according to Park rules, prepares weekly Outlook document to keep supervisor and fellow managers informed of progress in trails division.
•Assists the Trails Development Manager with decision making for trail routing, construction, and maintenance of natural surface trails: Designs and proposes reroutes; creates details and specifications of trails; meets with Trails Development Manager and stakeholders to approve plans consistent with surrounding park initiatives; resolves problems acts as final decision maker for trail issues and problems.
•Monitors work of outside agencies and contractors: Oversees and monitors work on site and monitors construction, trail building, and other activities in assigned reservation to gauge impact to natural resources and advises on best management practices.
•Performs administrative functions for assigned trail projects; Oversees administrative tasks related to payroll, purchasing, human resources, and volunteer services; acquires necessary equipment, tools and training for completion of work projects; monitors budget.
•Works collaboratively with stakeholders, volunteers, and Trails Division Staff on all aspects of trail development from planning through trail construction and opening events.
•Implements the Park District's Trail Signage Guidelines, including planning, layout installation and monitoring for trail way finding and user etiquette signage throughout the park district.
•Maintains service of hand-tool inventory and other supplies.
•Requires regular field visits to jobsites in remote areas.
•Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.
Bachelor's degree in construction management, construction technology, environmental science, ecology, natural resources, or a related field required; supplemented by two or more years of experience in trail construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
•Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license under the laws of the State of Ohio.
•Excellent field skills, must be able to work in more remote sections of the park, on and off trail, in all weather conditions, independently, if necessary.
•Strong Leadership Skills: must be able to support contractors, seasonal employees, and volunteer work crews through the completion of trail construction tasks.
•Experience planning and implementing trail projects.
•Ability to conduct research and apply knowledge to new situations
•Must be proficient with GPS, specifically field data entry and collection.
•Proficient wayfinding abilities, including map and compass skills
•Experience with GIS, including entry and application
•Ability to utilize basic trail building hand tools for the purpose of training and instructing volunteers and employee crews.
•Familiarity with Cleveland Metroparks, understanding of regional watershed, and geology.
•Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
•Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
•Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
•Management skills and strong business acumen, including problem solving, vision, ability to manage multiple programs and meet deadlines, collaboration, leadership, decision making and ability to analyze diverse facts and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations.
•Ability to work cooperatively with others.
•Proficiency in software programs including all Microsoft Office programs.
•Mature professional attitude and considerable discretion, including ability to manage confidential information.
•Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.
Shift: Required to work frequent weekends and occasional evenings. Must be flexible to accommodate various volunteer groups.
